چکیده

The Degree-Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree (dMST) problem attempts to find a minimum spanning tree with an added constraint that no nodes in the tree have a degree larger than a specified integer d. It is known that computing the d-MST is NP-hard for every d in the range 2 ≤ d ≤ (n − 2), where n denotes the total number of nodes. Several approximate algorithms (heuristics) have been proposed in the literature. We have previously proposed three approximate algorithms, IR, TC-RNN, and TC-NNC, for solving the d-MST problem, the last two (TC-RNN and TC-NNC) take advantages of nearest neighbors and their properties. Our experimental results showed that both the TC-RNN and TC -NNC algorithms consistently produce spanning trees with a smaller weight (better quality-ofsolution) than that of IR, but using slightly longer execution time. In this paper, we propose a new heap traversal technique that further improves the time efficiency of TC-RNN and TC-NNC. Our experiments using randomly generated, weighted graphs as inputs show that the TC-NNC algorithm outperforms the other two approximate algorithms in terms of the execution time and quality-of-solution.

A Metaheuristic Algorithm for the Minimum Routing Cost Spanning Tree Problem

The routing cost of a spanning tree in a weighted and connected graph is defined as the total length of paths between all pairs of vertices. The objective of the minimum routing cost spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree such that its routing cost is minimum. This is an NP-Hard problem that we present a GRASP with path-relinking metaheuristic algorithm for it. GRASP is a multi-start ...

Approximate Nearest Neighbor: Towards Removing the Curse of Dimensionality

We present two algorithms for the approximate nearest neighbor problem in high dimensional spaces. For data sets of size n living in IR, the algorithms require space that is only polynomial in n and d, while achieving query times that are sub-linear in n and polynomial in d. We also show applications to other high-dimensional geometric problems, such as the approximate minimum spanning tree.

SOLVING A STEP FIXED CHARGE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM BY A SPANNING TREE-BASED MEMETIC ALGORITHM

In this paper, we consider the step fixed-charge transportation problem (FCTP) in which a step fixed cost, sometimes called a setup cost, is incurred if another related variable assumes a nonzero value. In order to solve the problem, two metaheuristic, a spanning tree-based genetic algorithm (GA) and a spanning tree-based memetic algorithm (MA), are developed for this NP-hard problem. For compa...

The Diameter of Nearest Neighbor Graphs

Any connected plane nearest neighbor graph has diameter Ω(n). This bound generalizes to Ω(n) in any dimension d. For any set of n points in the plane, we define the nearest neighbor graph by selecting a unique nearest neighbor for each point, and adding an edge between each point and its neighbor. This is a directed graph with outdegree one; thus it is a pseudo-forest. Each component of the pse...
